With Gluga Neagra (Black Hood Society) in Timişoara:
(Original released in a Romanian fanzine.)

Hello there Boredom. So we would like to ask a few questions
for an interview with you. So the first question goes like this:

Tell us when and how did you guys start playing, o and
yes, why “Boredom”?

As far as I remember the band exists for a bit more than one year now. We
all knew each other before we started this band and already were good
friends. Some of us already played in bands before and we found out that
we share the same passion for making and listening to music, so why don’t
start a fucking band? Ohhh, and of course we all like to party hard, to
make new friends and meet new people, to travel around and see new places,
to get free food and to get fucking wasted, haha. That simple it was.
Concerning the name of the band, I guess we decided to take this name
because we pretty often get the feeling of being bored of everything.
That means all the things going on in this world, in the society that
surrounds us, in our daily lives becomes fucking boring to us to some
point. I really can’t imagine something more boring and tiring than this.
Being born, going to school, working, buying, TV, eating, sleeping,
pseudo-voting, suffering and in the end of all that: dying. There are many
days where I get the feeling that every action I do, I just do because ‘I
have to do it’. There’s no excitement or joy in any of those actions and
long-term seen this really bores me to death. The bad thing about it is,
that it seems like that the people in this society are aware of all that
and also bored as fuck of everything all the time, but it seems like as if
they don’t give a fuck on all the boredom they have to experience every
day and just keep on going on with their boring lives and never-ever
question anything. So maybe it’s also this complex called society that
bores me a lot. And also this whole punk thing that pretends to be so
different to the society outside: Too often it’s nothing more than a
mini-version of the society outside. Also acting the same, the same
structures, the same boring bullshit going on, without any excitement or
joy. To come to a fucking point, haha: That’s the main reason why we are
called Boredom.

Who and what influenced you in forming of this band?

Puhhh, really don’t know, I guess musically of course some of the bands we
got to know over the years and the music they made or still make which
means a lot to us. Surely also many of the books we read and many of the
people we met, but mostly probably simply all the experiences, as well the
good ones as all those bad ones we made in our lives so far. Punk, or music
in general has always been and still is a good opportunity to express
feelings, emotions, beliefs, views and to get along with the world that
surrounds us. And that’s it, nothing more or less.

How do you describe your lyrics, maybe you can also tell us
a little bit about your releases?

I really don’t know how to describe our lyrics the best. I mean if you
read through our lyrics you’ll get the picture pretty soon I guess. We
nearly don’t have any metaphorical parts or something. Rather, with this
band we try to keep the lyrics as straight and as clear for everyone as
possible. I just can talk for myself now, after spending some years in the
punk community or whatever you want to call this, you really realize that
the music the bands are playing repeats itself again and again and the
contents or topics of the whole thing also nearly stay the same
everywhere. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t see this just as negative, still
most of the contents and loads of bands mean a lot to me. So I guess I
just thought it’s better to face up the facts: Punk is just another
reactionary youth-culture thing, nothing more or less. Still I like it a
lot, I like most of the contents and the music. So why should we try to
come along with any pseudo-groundbreaking shit in our lyrics or in the
music we play? It’s just the things that are important to us and the
things we like trying to be presented as clear and straight as possible.
We are probably as pissed of everything as you are and we are also
probably as bored of everything as you are.

What can you tell us about the current scene in Austria? And
of course you can recommend us something, we won‘t mind hehe.

Austria has a really small scene compared to other countries. I guess it’s
mainly because Austria is a really small country compared to a lot of
other countries. Its size always differs from time to time. Due to the
fact that the country is that small nearly everybody knows everyone within
the punk community. Most of the time that’s quite nice: People try to help
each other and to support each other. It doesn’t matter that much what
kind of punk or hardcore music your band is playing. In most of the bigger
cities there are some bands and people existing that set up shows and do
good work. Unfortunately in Graz, the town we are from, the last two or
three years were not that good compared to the situation we had years ago.
But at the moment it seems like that it is getting better again. More
people are coming to shows, listening to the bands and putting effort in
d.i.y. spaces. There are some nice places to hang out and watch shows. At
the moment it is the E.K.H., the I:DA and the TÜWI in Vienna, the
Triebwerk in Wiener Neustadt, Sub in our hometown Graz and some places in
Linz, Bregenz or Dornbirn.

Are you involved in any other projects besides this
band…?

With projects do you mean other bands or where we are involved in general?
Two of us also play in Plague Mass and used to play in a couple of other
bands that existed over the years. Besides making music some of us also
put effort in political work in several local groups and we’re setting up
d.i.y. shows in Graz as well. The struggle for establishing an autonomous
centre here in Graz still goes on. And as everywhere else this fucking
state more and more tries to silence and criminalize people who do
political work or actions that don’t fit them for any reason, so the need
for solidarity actions and anti-repression work also becomes more and more
important. We try to give our best concerning that, as a band by playing
and setting up benefit shows to raise money and as individuals by
participating in such solidarity groups and trying to support people that
got criminalized as good as good as possible. The regrowing fascism, in
Austria mainly through right-wing parties that work within the law and the
system, but sometimes also by fascist groups that also open practise
physical violence against migrants, homosexuals or people that don’t fit
them, unfortunately is also in Austria a big issue. So there’s possibly
more need for antifascist work and action groups than ever before.

So we hosted you along with the crazy guys from Rivers Run Dry. How was on tour with them, because some of us know touring can be fun, but it is also a hard sometimes?

The tour was really good. Maybe it wasn’t the best idea to do it in
February. The weather fucked us a lot, the drives were really too long
sometimes. Concerning Rivers Run Dry: They are really great dudes and an
awesome band. We can’t wait to tour with them again and we honestly love
them.

So we know that you got a demo out, what’s next?

We’re going to release a split 7inch with Sand Creek Massacre from the
Netherlands and a split 10 or 12inch with Rivers Run Dry within the next
months. This summer we’re also planning to record our first full length
album. Beside that we want to tour intensely and to play live as much as
possible. The next tour will bring us to Spain, France, Switzerland, Italy
and Slovenia and we already have some more plans for upcoming tours later
the year.

And we reached the end of our list of boring and stressing questions, but we are left with one more important question for all of you and we would like you to be honest and also be critical about it…: What did you liked and also what did you disliked here in Romania?

Both shows we played in Romania were really good. It seems like that there
are really some people that put a lot of effort and passion into the whole
thing. We really got the feeling of being welcome and got treated really
nice and heartily. The only thing which made us some troubles in Romania
was the bad weather, the long distances and the bad roads between Romanian
cities.

Thank you for taking the time to give this interview, we had a pleasure meeting you guys and we hope to see you soon again. So if you have one more thing to say to the world, let it all out, hehe.

Thanks a lot. We really appreciate that and had a lot of fun! Cheers and
see you next time. Boredom
